Watch-list: Shall I Compare You To A Summer’s Day?

Shall I Compare You To A Summer’s Day is a film from writer/director Mohammad Shawky Hassan.

Reportedly based on Hassan’s own relationships and encounters, this is an exploration of love and desire.

The cast includes Ahmed Awadall, Richard Gabriel Gersch, Donia Massoud, and Ahmed El Gendy.

Initially, this film feels a little confusing. It’s not following a chronological narrative, and there’s a mix of styles that feels almost underwhelming.

There’s animation, narration, naked men, interviews, and singing – it’s an erotic fever-dream.

But as this exercise in queer storytelling unfolds, it becomes a really compelling exploration of love, desire, relationships, and sexual encounters.

Set in Cairo, this film centres queer Arabic men and celebrates the love they have for each other. It’s a perspective that we don’t often get to see.

Definitely worth adding to your watch-list.
