Bina Baitel, a French-Swedish architect, founded her design and architecture studio in Paris in 2006 after graduating from the École National Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris La Villette. With a multicultural background growing up in the Middle East, she explores the question of cultural interpenetration in formal, functional, and symbolic aspects.
Bina Baitel’s work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris and the Premier Prix de la Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie d’Aubusson. Her design and furnishing of the International High School in Nantes won the Label VIA and the National Wood Construction Award in 2015. She was awarded the Le FD100 prize by Le French Design in 2019 for her international influence.
Bina Baitel’s approach is transdisciplinary, between art, design, and architecture, and she cultivates experimentation to transform concepts into objects and spaces. Her creations are exhibited in museums and international fairs, including Milan, Dubai, Paris, New York, Venice, and Basel, and are now part of permanent public and private collections.
One of her latest collections, HELIA, designed in collaboration with a workshop near Lyon, features lines, curves, and clear, satin-finished or tinted glass to enhance light and its reflections. Bina Baitel’s choice of glass types is not only for visual aesthetics but also for touch, as she prioritizes the tactile aspect of the material. The Flute glass used in HELIA invites the hand to appreciate its relief, while the frosted glass on the surfaces of the HELIA tables and console offer a velvety touch. Her Ottoman SUBLIME, with a soft cushion seemingly suspended on its glass base, is a remarkable piece of furniture that combines comfort and design (www.glassvariations.com).
Bina Baitel recently showcased her creations at the Maison et Objets fair in September 2022, where she was selected with three other designers for TALENTS SO FRENCH. With her multicultural background and transdisciplinary approach, Bina Baitel’s work continues to awe and inspire audiences worldwide.
