Swedish hockey team, Kiruna IF, ended up in the spotlight of the media in the summer of 2014. They became the first athlete’s association in Sweden to get a LGBTQ-certificate from the Swedish organization, RFSU, which works with sexual information and for sexual equality.
What this means is that the hockey team and athlete’s association gets educated about the LGBTQ-world, about equality and in the long run to treat all equally. Everyone, no matter of sexuality, religion or other aspects will get the chance to play, or get the opportunity to show that they can play. The hockey team also changed their match gear into a rainbow coloured one.
Kiruna IF participated in the Stockholm Pride Parade in August 2014, and last week when the annual televised gala for Sweden’s athletes was aired the hockey team was honoured with an award for their courage to want to challenge traditional values in the athlete’s world.
A reason as good as any to start watching hockey.
